About this calculator

The number of studs in a straight wall is the length in inches divided by the spacing, rounded up, plus one for the end. At 16 inches on center, a 12-foot wall needs 10 studs for the wall field.

That count is only the field. Corners, intersecting walls, door and window openings, headers and blocking all add studs, so real framing uses more than this calculator shows. Plates are three times the wall length: one bottom plate and a doubled top plate.
