Fence Calculator
Count the panels, posts and concrete bags for a straight fence run.
Calculator
| Posts | 14 posts |
|---|---|
| Post length (2 ft in the ground) | 8 ft |
| Bags of concrete (2 per post) | 28 bags |
How it is calculated
100 ft ÷ 8 ft panels = 12.50, rounded up to 13 panels. Posts = panels + 1 = 14. Two 50-lb bags of concrete per post = 28 bags.
About this calculator
For a straight run of panel fence you need one panel per section, and one more post than panels, because every section is bounded by posts. With 8-foot panels, a 100-foot run needs 13 panels (12.5 rounded up) and 14 posts.
Corners, gates and sloping ground change the count. A gate replaces a panel and needs extra posts and hardware, and fences on slopes may need stepped or racked panels.
Worked examples
| Project | 8 ft fence panels | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| 50 ft of 6 ft high fence in 8 ft panels | 7 panels | $280 – $910 |
| 100 ft of 6 ft high fence in 8 ft panels | 13 panels | $520 – $1,690 |
| 150 ft of 4 ft high fence in 8 ft panels | 19 panels | $760 – $2,470 |
| 200 ft of 6 ft high fence in 8 ft panels | 25 panels | $1,000 – $3,250 |
Buying notes
- Check the real panel width with the supplier: panels sold as 8 ft are sometimes a little narrower.
- Post depth is commonly about one third of the post's length, and deeper where the ground freezes; check local requirements.
- The calculator assumes two 50-lb bags of concrete per post. Your hole size may need more or fewer.

How to measure and use this calculator
- Measure the total run of fence in feet.
- Choose the fence height.
- Read panels, posts and concrete bags.
- Add posts for corners and gates.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to count the extra post at the end of the run.
- Not checking the property line and local height limits.
- Setting posts too shallow.
Tips
- Corners and gates change the post count; add one post per corner and gate.
- Set posts about one third of their length deep, or below the frost line where required.
- Check property lines and local height limits before building.
Frequently asked questions
How many posts do I need for 100 feet of fence?
With 8 ft panels you need 13 panels and 14 posts: 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5, rounded up to 13 panels, plus one extra post.
How far apart should fence posts be?
Posts are spaced by the panel width plus the post, which is close to 8 feet center to center for 8-foot panels.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
Many areas limit fence height or require a permit. Check with your local building or zoning office before you build.
