Gravel Calculator
Convert an area and depth into cubic yards and tons of gravel.
Calculator
| Cubic yards to order (+5%) | 0.97 yd³ |
|---|---|
| Cubic yards (exact) | 0.93 yd³ |
| Cubic feet | 25.0 ft³ |
How it is calculated
10 ft × 10 ft × 3 in ÷ 12 = 25.0 cubic feet = 0.93 cubic yards. Add 5% for settling and uneven ground: 0.97 cubic yards (about 1.36 tons).
About this calculator
Gravel is bought by weight (tons) or by volume (cubic yards). The calculator finds the volume from length, width and depth, then converts to tons with a typical density.
Density varies: crushed stone and gravel commonly weigh about 1.4 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard depending on stone size, moisture and compaction. This calculator uses 1.4, the low end, so the tonnage your supplier quotes for a specific product may be higher. Ask for the weight per cubic yard of the stone you choose.
Worked examples
| Project | Tons (about 1.4 t/yd³, +5%) | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| a 10x10 ft area covered with gravel 3 in deep | 1.36 tons | $34.03 – $88.47 |
| a 10x20 ft area covered with gravel 4 in deep | 3.63 tons | $90.74 – $236 |
| a 20x20 ft area covered with gravel 3 in deep | 5.44 tons | $136 – $354 |
| a 12x50 ft area covered with gravel 4 in deep | 10.89 tons | $272 – $708 |
Buying notes
- Order a little extra: the base layer compacts and the edges spread.
- Landscape fabric under a path keeps the stone from sinking into the soil and slows weeds.
- Stone size matters: smaller stone is more comfortable to walk on, larger stone suits bases and drainage. Ask the supplier which fits your job.

How to measure and use this calculator
- Measure length and width of the area.
- Pick a depth: around three inches for paths, more for driveways.
- Read both cubic yards and tons; suppliers sell either way.
- Ask your supplier for the weight per cubic yard of the exact stone.
Common mistakes
- Treating tons and cubic yards as interchangeable; the stone type changes the conversion.
- Skipping weed fabric or a compacted base.
- Ordering exactly the calculated amount even though the base compacts.
Tips
- Gravel is sold by the ton or cubic yard; one cubic yard commonly weighs 1.4 to 1.7 tons, and this calculator uses the low end of 1.4.
- Use a 3 inch depth for paths, 4–6 inches for driveways, and compact the base layer.
- Landscape fabric underneath keeps the stone from sinking and weeds from coming up.
Frequently asked questions
How many tons of gravel in a cubic yard?
Commonly about 1.4 to 1.7 tons for crushed stone and gravel, depending on size, moisture and compaction. This calculator uses 1.4, the low end, so your supplier's tonnage may be higher.
How do I convert cubic yards of gravel to tons?
Multiply cubic yards by the density, commonly 1.4 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard. Your supplier can give the exact figure for the product.
How deep should gravel be?
Paths and garden areas often get about 2 to 3 inches. Driveways usually need 4 to 6 inches or more in total, laid in layers over a compacted base.
